Eligibility Criteria:

The criteria for a Newark Delaware NAACP Gary Hayman Scholarship will include the following, and it will be publicized and posted on the Newark NAACP website. · The student must have a physical address of Newark, Delaware (i.e., zip codes 19702, 19711, or 19713) and graduate in the spring of the year of the award or be a recent graduate. · The student must submit a letter of application describing her/his/their educational objectives and commitments to the values of diversity, equity, and inclusion. · The student must have a grade point average of 3.0 on a 4-point scale. · The student must have a record of service to the community. · The student must be nominated by or receive a supporting recommendation from a teacher, administrator, counselor, or a member of the Newark Delaware NAACP.

Meet our inaugural Hayman Scholarship winner, Queenesther Nyah, Christiana High School, Class of 2024. Nyah graduated 5th in her class with a 4.+ GPA and will pursue a degree in biological sciences at DSU with future plans to attend medical school.

Nyah was accompanied at the presentation by her biggest supporters, her brother and mother.  Congrats to all!

The award was presented by Branch leaders, Steven Davis and Susan Mitchell with CHS Principal Tom Malinowski and CSD Superintendent Dr. Dan Shelton present.

If you want to join online via the National NAACP website, PLEASE make sure you indicate that your ADULT MEMBERSHIP request is for the NEWARK BRANCH #2355-B, age 25 and up.

 

The GREATER NEWARK YOUTH COUNCIL (ages 0-24) number is #27-AB. 

 

Please also be aware that your membership may take longer to process, including the appropriate unit receiving your local dues portion.
